Lifetime Benefits of The Montessori Method! – Part 1
Every living being is constantly seeking to be infinitely happy. Every activity of life is subtly geared towards that. Every action, deed or effort is in some way a step towards that goal. This search has been ongoing since time immemorial. However, there is no “one solution fits all” to this riddle.
Just as blocking a flowing river will cause flooding, if individual freedom is blocked, will cause distress. Someone wise said it nicely: “Only when the mind is quiet, one can rationally think!”. Just like the banks of a river, guiding the flow of water, a trained teacher is critical in providing guidance and nurturing a child’s mental and physical growth process. Dr. Montessori quoted beautifully: “Free the child’s potential, and you will transform him into the world.”
Dr. Maria Montessori was an Italian educator, physician and scientist, who designed a unique methodology and prepared a classroom environment that fostered the children’s natural desire to learn. Dr. Montessori’s innovative method sparked interest around the world and attracted the attention of prominent educators eager to learn it. Dr. Montessori visited the US in 1911.
After observing the various characteristics of young children, Dr. Montessori devised a system of early childhood education that was specifically designed to meet the basic needs of the child. The Montessori method itself has many aspects and a well-trained Montessori directress has studied and worked a great deal. But the basic ideas and concepts of the system are easily understood by all.
The Montessori way offers a sensible, structured system that allows a child to develop at their own pace, using their own abilities, with the guidance of a trained Montessori directress and the use of specifically designed Montessori materials. The Montessori system has three main parts: the child, the environment and the directress.
In the next article, we will describe each of the areas in further detail.
“One test of the correctness of educational procedure is the happiness of the child.” ~~~Maria Montessori
